Passport planning is one of those tasks that is easy to leave until the last minute. In 2026, the Government of Canada updated passport and travel-document service fees, with most fee changes taking effect on March 31. The official passport service page also notes that service conditions can change, including delivery disruptions in affected regions. For that reason, travellers should verify current processing information directly with Canada.ca before making time-sensitive plans.

Check the document itself

Before a trip, confirm that the passport is valid for the entire journey and that the destination country accepts the remaining validity. Inspect the document for water damage, torn pages or other physical issues. A damaged passport can cause delays or refusal of boarding, and a passport that was reported lost or stolen should not be used even if it is later found.
